We have an aircraft in for annual inspection which has the 3" N numbers. FAR 45.29 states that “(i) An aircraft displaying marks at least 2 inches high before November 1, 1981 may display those marks until the aircraft is repainted or the marks are repainted, restored, or changed”. The aircraft was repainted and registration number changed on 8/1/99.
Registration marking is now required to be at least 12” in height.
My question is whether this is owner / operator responsibility? Is this considered Airworthiness as far as the Inspector is concerned? My feeling is that it is Airworthiness since it is regulatory. I have the question in to my PMI but haven't heard back yet.
